She had earned herself two master’s degrees, so one would definitely expect her to land a high paying corporate job. But she in fact chose a totally different path, coming from a family with a little touch of Indian and quote slovenian mixture nurtured turned out to be one of the leading figures in space exploration. In fact, her achievements turned factual on the rest of the world and inspired more women to take adventurous professions.

She not only advanced from being a woman space scientist to a space engineer, her achievements also made her a NASA astronaut. Today we will analyze her complete biography.

Sunita Lyn Williams was born on September 19, 1965, in the city of Ohio in America. She was born into a multicultural family which later gave fuels to her interest to travel around the globe. She was lucky enough to spend most of her childhood in the town of Needham in Massachusetts. From childhood Williams had always shown a love and interest towards science and exploration.

She later graduated from Needham high school in the year of 1983 and went onto pursue a bachelor’s degree in Physical Science in the United States Naval Academy making herself qualified as a veteran in the year of 1987. Her journey did not end there, rather she pursued her Education further and graduated with a master’s degree in engineering in management from Florida Institute of technology in the year of 1995.

Before venturing into space NASA Astronaut, Williams served with distinction in the U. S. Navy. She had completed her earliest stages of flight training by the time she had qualified as a Naval Aviator in 1989. As a Naval Aviator, she learned to fly helicopters and worked as a test pilot. In her military career, she accumulated over 3000 hours of flight time across 30 different aircrafts. The navy inculcated skills such as resilience, technical know-how, and leadership in her. It is these qualities that later proved vital to her success in NASA.

Williams was one of the chosen candidates in 1998 for NASA Astronaut Group 17, nicknamed The Penguins. She had to go through extremely challenging training for 2 years which included learning the Russian language, mastering the system of the ISS, and physical training for spacewalks. Learning to adapt to NASA’s rigorous training program for astronauts came easily for Williams thanks to her previous experience as a Navy test pilot.

Space Missions and Record Breaking Achievements
Expedition 14/15 (2006 – 2007)
Sunita Williams’ first spaceflight was in December of 2006 where she was launched on Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-116). This flight took her to the International Space Station (ISS) where she joined the crew of Expedition 14/15. During this mission, she set the record for the longest time spent in space, totaling 195 days.

In the course of her work with the ISS, Williams undertook powerwalks in space for a total of 29 hours. Her spacewalks were essential for ISS assembly and maintenance, such as the reconfiguration of power systems and attachment of new parts.

A vivid recollection from this mission was when Williams partook in the Boston Marathon from space. On April 16, 2007, using a treadmill that was secured to the ISS, she ran the marathon in just over 4 hours, becoming the first individual to do a marathon in space.

She returned to space in July onboard the Soyuz TMA-05M during patiently waiting for “expeditions” 32/33 in July 2012. In the course of these expeditions, she sketchily served as the commander of Expedition 33, now one of two female ISS commanders who get to pilot the craft.

In the course of this mission, she performed three more power walks in addition to the other four, bringing her total spacewalk time to fifty hours and 40 minutes, a record for women astronauts at that time.

This mission combined with her first mission brought her out for 127 days, adding to her cumulative 322 days into space. This makes her one of the most experienced and veteran astronauts in Europe.

In regard to space science and human spaceflight, Williams has received numerous accolades, including:

  • NASA Space Flight Medal
  • NASA Distinguished Service Medal
  • Defense Superior Service Medal
  • Padma Bhushan, India’s second highest civilian award ( 2008)

These accomplishments stand as motivation for women and youth today to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) Williams has set a legacy that will never be erased.

Working with Boeing, she will be leading the Crew Flight Test (CFT) as commander which marks Williams upcoming trip into space as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. This flight serves to be Boeing’s first mission with live people aboard the Starliner Spacecraft.

Paving the way further, Williams will also be showcasing her experience and exceptional leadership by commanding the CFT mission, which aims to prove the Starliner’s ability to move astronauts to and from the International Space Station (ISS).

Other than an astronaut, Sunita Williams is an educator and a global ambassador for the cooperation of different nations. With her Indian and Slovenian roots, she serves as a representative of unity and nationalism. She often speaks about the need for inclusion of diverse nations in space programs and how countries ought to work together to use space for the advantage of mankind.

The living example of how adventurous attitude combined with perseverance could break glass ceilings in the fields of aviation and space exploration for women. Williams has proven to the world that with enough grit and determination, nobody is bound by the limits of our planet Earth.

She completed a triathalon from the International Space Station in 2012. For this event, she utilized exercise equipment to replicate swimming, cycling, and running.
